
Early Life
Robyn Rihanna Fenty was born February 20th, 1988 in Saint Michael, Barbados. She is eldest child of Ronald and Monica Fenty and has two younger brothers Rorrey and Rajad. Rihanna went to Charles F. Broome Memorial School, a primary school in Barbados, and then on to the Combermere School. In 2003, after forming a girl group with two classmates at the age of 15, Rihanna along with her two band mates, received their big break when she was introduced to record producer Evan Rogers, who was vacationing in Barbados. After impressing at a audition Rihanna moved to Connecticut, New England, to live with Rogers and his wife. Rogers, along with his partner, Carl Sturken, helped Rihanna record material in the U.S. which was sent to various recording companies. One of Rihanna's demos was sent to Def Jam Records who invited her to audition for rapper turned Def Jam president Jay-Z, who eventually signed her in 2004.
Career Highlights
Rihanna's first album, Music of the Sun, was released on August 30, 2005 in the United States debuting at number ten on the Billboard 200 and at number two on Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums, selling 69,000 copies in its first week. Music of the Sun yielded two singles, the first being "Pon de Replay" which was released in August, 2005. The single became a huge success upon its release peaking at number two in the US on Billboard Hot 100 charts. It also became a global hit where it peaked within the top 10 across 15 countries including Canada, U.K. Germany and Australia. The second single "If It's Lovin' That You Want" was less successful than "Pon de Replay", but it became a hit nonetheless by managing to achieve a top 40 charting in the USA reaching a high of number 36. Music of the Sun has sold over 2 million copies worldwide.
Only eight months later Rihanna’s second album, A Girl Like Me, was released in April 2006. The album debuted at number five on the U.S. Billboard 200 with over 115,000 copies sold in its first week, nearly twice the debut sales of Music of the Sun. It debuted at number six on the UK Album Chart with 24,000 copies sold in the first week. The lead single, "SOS" peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, her first number one single, and at number two in the UK. The second single, entitled "Unfaithful", became her third top ten hit in the U.S. and the UK. The third single, "We Ride", failed to chart on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, however, it became her fifth UK top 20 single, where it peaked at number 17 and made number one on the U.S. Hot Dance Club Play chart. The fourth single from the album was "Break It Off", featuring Sean Paul, which peaked at number nine on the Hot 100. To date the album has sold just less than 2 million worldwide. In June 2007 Rihanna released Good Girl Gone Bad. The album has achieved worldwide success and is Rihanna’s biggest selling album to date having sold 6.9 million copies. The lead single, "Umbrella" was released during late March in the United States and early May across the rest of the world. "Umbrella" reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and held that position for seven weeks. The song remained at number one on the UK Singles Chart for ten consecutive weeks, the longest running chart topper in a decade and reached number one in twenty-seven other countries across the globe The album was re-released in June 2008, a year after its original release, under the title Good Girl Gone Bad: Reloaded. The double-disc deluxe edition package includes three new singles: the U.S., Canadian and U.K. number one "Take a Bow","If I Never See Your Face Again" and "Disturbia", which became the third single from the album to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100. On the back of the albums success Rihanna won two American Music Awards for Favourite Pop/Rock Female Artist and Favourite Soul/R&B Female Artist in 2008.
